We’ve come a long way, baby.

Now I may have known some people longer, but as of this week I have been best friends with my, well, best friend for ten years.

Ten years! I know some of you right now are all, “Oh whatever, I’ve been best friends with mine for [insert obscene amount of years that totally trumps mine],” but you go ahead and blog that on your blog, because this is my post and we’re gonna be talking about me. And her. And our eternal friendship flame that still burns brightly.

To get a better understanding of the significance of this, let me take you back ten years. This week, ten years ago, I became a freshman in high school. Yeeeah, you see where this is going? Not only was it the end of those precious 90s where we were high off of Lisa Frank and an awkward phase where we thought that hippy look was coming back, we were freshmen. In a year that, beside the fact that I was like omg finally a highschooler and I had met my best friend, it was pretty effin’ embarrassing year in which to be alive.

Top Songs of 1999:
“No Scrubs” – TLC
“Every Morning” – Sugar Ray

What we were actually listening to:
“One Headlight” – The Wallflowers
“Anything” – Third Eye Blind

What most were wearing:
American Eagle, Timberlane boots, and a lot of white eyeliner

What we were wearing:
Not that, thank god.

We challenged each others’ smarts on a daily basis. We emailed each other every week when we lived in different cities. We watched each other go through breakups (notably, mine), we met each others’ boyfriends that would eventually become our husbands. We edited term papers and short stories and resumes. We traded books and movies and music. We discussed our futures and the possibility of zombie attacks. We survived high school, college, and young adulthood together.

Tiffany has stood by my side through ill-chosen outfits, bad haircuts, and some choicey mistakes (which include – but are not limited to – taste in boyfriends). She has let me make my own decisions and has always provided reasonable advice. She always returns my call/text/email. She lets me know how much I mean to her in every birthday card. She is never boastful, hurtful, or selfish. She is the most loyal, kind, and honest person I know and I am so happy to have had her a part of my daily life for this long.
