New, Old Buys
I guess I should, y’know, actually shop one of these days. And I have been shopping, believe me, it’s just not as fun blogging about it as, say, judging dresses or talking about what I wish I could buy.
Anyway. When I was a kid you couldn’t drag me into the Goodwill because I was afraid that people would think we were poor (we probably were, but those kind of things are fuzzy when your mom denies you jelly shoes and Marshmellow Fluff – the things she thought were trashy and the two things I so desperately wanted). Now that I’m paying my own bills and spending way too much on things like Easy Mac and Tanqueray, I’ve embraced the idea of shopping at Goodwill.
“Embraced” is not really the word I’m looking for…more like “tackled and bear hugged the crap” out of Goodwill. It’s true, I now love to gloat when I find great pieces there. So let’s gloat!
If you haven’t had the chance to have a first-hand experience with my couch, please allow me to invite you over so I can brag. Made in the 50s(?), I don’t think this couch has ever had an ass sit on it without a layer of plastic separating the two. Anyway, it’s mine now and I let that baby breathe. $120, Goodwill
The Goodwill began to offer an even cheaper option to its chain, the GoodCents store,
probably in reaction to their recent renovations of the original store. Lately I’ve noticed the prices increase in Goodwill as well as high mark-ups on designer brands and vintage coats, so I’ve been forced to go to the sister store. Despite the typical skeez factor of this store, I will say that they always have a great collection of vinyl and vintage luggage. That’s how I came by this piece, which will be my new carry-on to all of those exotic places I’ve been dreaming about as I sit in my 62 degree office. Bag $.75, Beach coverup $2.99, Shades $.50, Jewelry and overall sassiness: model’s own.
And while I’m not fighting old ladies for scarves in the Goodwill bins, I’m over at The Other Side. Owned and operating by the most fabulous woman (and cousin) I can find, I might be a little biased. But whatevs, her store is amazing and it’s so big I look at stuff for days.
I recently went in on a dining room table hunt and she showed me the most amazing.thing.EVAR. Behold, my new handmade mosaic dining room table. I was hesitant to buy it considering a boy is moving in with me, but I couldn’t leave it behind and have some old hag swoop in and take this.
Table and chairs, $225, The Other Side
If you live in my area, I advise everyone to go to Railroad Square and check the store out! Zan, the owner, is so sweet and is really negotiable if you find something you really love (and you will, if you’re cool enough). When I picked up the table with my friend Patrick, nothing made my day more than him running through the store exclaiming, “TROLL DOLLS!”
